The rescue happened in Dutchess County on the night of Tuesday, Feb. 18, when Millbrook Fire Department and EMS crews responded to a high-priority medical call, only to find that treacherous ice on the property’s driveway made it impossible for an ambulance to reach the residence, the department said on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

With time being critical, EMS crews were rushed to the scene with help from the fire department. After assessing the patient, first responders determined that immediate higher-level care was required and that transporting the patient by ground—especially with the icy conditions—would cause dangerous delays.

A medevac was soon requested and a landing zone was quickly established nearby. Firefighters and rescue squad members assisted EMS in getting the patient to the helicopter, where LifeNet of New York Air 2 took over and safely flew the patient to a medical facility.
